About this Artwork

The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of the American spirit, and it almost seems that freedom and democracy are the principal causes that made the United States the superpower. But during the last decades, there are many natural and human disasters occurred in the country, especially the economic crisis that started from Wall Street in 2008, which affected the whole world; these have raised many concerns internationally on the freedom and democratic system that the Americans always preached about.

In explaining the idea of this bronze statue sculpture, artist Chen Wenling said, that many years ago, the famous economist John Maynard Keynes asserted that the free economic system of the United States would bring huge hidden dangers and disasters to humanity. Adapting to Keynes's theory, the appropriation of the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of the American soul, and the iconic Taurus of Wall Street created a paradoxical reality of "spearing its shield and attacking its shield.
