Sino Sculpture Group's Beijing office building and foundry
We, Sino Sculpture Group a professional bronze sculpture foundry mainly focus on bronze artwork, statue fabrication, and related services. For a long time, bronze sculpture foundry in China has been mainly based on the casting of bronze sculpture, mostly using the lost wax casting method and the lost sand casting method to realize the sculpture in bronze material.
How to use the lost wax casting method to make a sculpture?
Lost-wax casting also called “ investment casting" is the process by which a duplicate metal sculpture (often silver, gold, brass, or bronze) is cast from an original sculpture. Intricate work can be achieved by this method.

The lost wax casting process generally has the following steps:
Step 1, Model-making. To create an original model from wax, clay, or other material. Wax and oil-based clay are often preferred because these materials retain their softness.
Step 2, Mouldmaking. Normally we make rigid outer molds contain softer inner mold, which is the exact negative of the original model. Inner molds are usually made of rubber or silicone, which is supported by the outer mold. The outer mold can be made from plaster or fiberglass and so on.
Step 3, Wax. Once the mold is finished, molten wax is poured into it and swished around until an even coating, normally 3mm thick one time, and repeated until the desired thickness is reached. Usually about 3 mm (1⁄8 inch) thick, covers the inner surface of the mold. This is repeated until the desired thickness is reached.
Step 4, Removal of wax. The hollow wax copy is removed from the mold. We can also reuse the mold to make multiple copies.
Step 5, Chasing. Simple understand, “Chasing” is used as a heated metal tool to make the wax mold more look like the finished piece, with no parting line or flashing.
Step 6, Spring. The wax copy normally leaves an entrance providing paths for the molten casting material to flow and for air to escape. The carefully planned spring usually begins at the top with a wax "cup," which is attached by wax cylinders to various points on the wax copy. The spring does not have to be hollow, as it will be melted out later in the process.
Step 7, Slurry. Means to make a ceramic shell-coated, it is not made of ceramic, but a combination of slurry and grit. This shell is allowed to dry, and the process is repeated until at least a half-inch coating covers the entire piece, except for the inside of the cup.
Step 8, Burnout. The ceramic shell-coated piece is placed cup-down in a kiln, whose heat hardens the silica coatings into a shell, and the wax melts and runs out. Now all that remains of the original artwork is the negative space formerly occupied by the wax, inside the hardened ceramic shell. The feeder, vent tubes, and cup are also now hollow.
Step 9, Testing. Cool the ceramic shell and test to see if the water will flow freely through the feeder and vent tubes. To test the thickness, holes can be drilled into the shell, and then patched.
Step 10, Pouring. Pour the melted metal into the shell, and make sure the shell is hot because otherwise, the temperature difference would shatter it. The filled shells are then allowed to cool.
Step 11, Release. Removing the shell and releasing the roughcasting.
Step 12, Metal-chasing&surface treatment. Removing the casting process sign and treating the surface as requested. Then the whole process is completed.
Some completed bronze artworks by the bronze casting method.

Above is the process of the traditional lost wax method. However, as a sculpture manufacturer with 20 years of experience, the Sino sculpture group combines the traditional casting process and develops the bronze forging process at the same time, which is a very good way to realize the large bronze sculpture.
Bronze Casting Process of Large Monument
Patina on bronze casting sculptures
The biggest difference from bronze casting is the material. When forging we like to use a copper plate whose copper content is usually higher than 98% or more, while the general copper content of cast bronze is only about 85%. In addition, forging can ensure the uniformity of surface flatness and thickness, but for sculptures with more surface details, we still recommend the traditional casting method.
