“It’s a very honest project. It’s not trying to cover up what it is and it’s an example of everything done right in reclaiming a quarry. As it seeps down and stains, it will be even more beautiful.”

This comment came from ASLA to Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden.
This pit garden is located at the northwest corner of the Shanghai Botanical Garden and is connected to the entire botanical garden through the green ring road and the main road along the Chenshan River. Chenshan quarry is a man-made mining site. Since the 20th century, quarrying has taken place. Half of the mountain on the south slope has been cut off. To protect the ruins of the mine, speed up the construction of ecological mines, and beautify the environment, combined with the construction of the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, it has been approved to be built into a delicate and distinctive restoration garden.
The designer chose two ecological restoration design principles for the special form of the quarry pit. The first is to build a new biological community by remodeling the terrain and adding vegetation. Aiming at the exposed mountain cliffs, the designer did not adopt the conventional wrapping method but respected the authenticity of the cliff landscape. Under the premise of effective avoidance due to safety considerations, the designer adopted a "subtraction" strategy without intervention, so that the cliff wall will repair itself under natural conditions such as rain and sunlight. For the retaining wall at the edge of the platform, the designer wrapped the material with an industrial imprint, such as a Curved Corten steel façade, to form a landscape interface with rhythmic changes and light and rhythm.
A dangerous, inaccessible abandoned land has been transformed into an attractive tourist attraction that brings people close to the natural landscape and experiencing the quarrying industrial culture.
